Historia de la canción

Roxanne fué escrita por Sting inspirado por las prostitutas que vio cerca del hotel en el que se alojaba The Police en Paris para actuar en el Nashville Club en Octubre de 1977. El título de la canción viene del nombre de uno de los personajes de Cyrano de Bergerac y salía en un antiguo poster que colgaba en la recepción del hotel.

Sting concibió la canción originalmente como una bossa nova, no obstante, Stewart Copeland le sugirió cambiar el ritmo a un tango. Durante la grabación, Sting se sentó accidentalmente sobre los teclados. El acorde atonal y las risas que le siguieron fueron preservadas y salen al inicio de la grabación. Al principio el grupo no estaba del todo convencido con la canción pero Miles Copeland III se entusiasmó con ella en cuanto la escuchó, convirtiéndose en su manager y consiguiéndoles su primera grabación con A&M Records. El single no tuvo éxito a la primera, pero fue reeditado en Abril 1979 llegando al número 12 en el Reino Unido y al 32 en los Estados Unidos, además de convertirse en uno de los clásicos del grupo y parte del repertorio de Sting durante su carrera en solitario.

El nombre de “Roxanne” se repite hasta 25 veces.

La revista Rolling Stone la clasificó numero 388 en su lista de las 500 mejores canciones de todos los tiempos.

Además fue la primera canción que el grupo tocó en directo en los premios Grammy 2007 para inaugurar su Tour de Reunión del 30 Aniversario.
